Tesla’s Best Ever: Why the Model S is the Car That Changed Everything

When people debate Tesla’s greatest achievement, many point to the Tesla Model S. It’s not only Tesla’s most iconic sedan, but arguably the electric car that made the world seriously rethink what EVs can and should be. Below, I’ll dig into what makes the Model S so special, what its strengths are, and where it’s been challenged — and why it still holds my vote as Tesla’s best ever.

The Rise of the Model S

Launched in 2012, the Tesla Model S marked a major departure from what electric vehicles had been up to that point. Before it, EVs were often seen as compromises: slow, limited in range, less luxurious, or with unattractive design. Tesla set out to change all that. The Model S combined luxury, performance, and range in a way that had rarely been done.

It wasn’t just about speed or zero emissions — it was about delivering an electric car that could genuinely compete with (and often beat) premium gas-powered sedans in comfort, safety, prestige, and driving experience.

What Makes It “Best”

Here are the key reasons the Model S often stands alone:

1. Performance + Range Combo

The Model S P85D (and later variants) delivered mind-blowing acceleration (0-60 mph in under 3.5 seconds in some versions), while also offering some of the longest driving ranges among EVs. This reduced “range anxiety” substantially.

2. Prestige & Recognition

It was the first EV to win MotorTrend’s Ultimate Car of the Year among all winners in 70 years.

Consumer Reports gave the P85D a perfect score, calling it "the best-performing car that Consumer Reports has ever tested."

It was named “Best Overall Car” in multiple assessments due to its combination of safety, comfort, performance, tech, and value.

3. Innovation & Technology Leadership

Tesla used the Model S platform to push innovations: over-the-air updates, large touchscreen interface, autopilot features, strong safety ratings, and premium interior design. These helped shift consumer expectations for what cars should offer in terms of software, user experience, and integration.

4. Cultural & Market Impact

More than being just a car, the Model S served as proof that EVs could be aspirational, high performance, and luxurious. It helped break stereotypes. It also pushed other carmakers to accelerate their electric vehicle programs. Without the Model S, Tesla’s visibility & legitimacy would be far weaker today.

Where the Model S Isn't Perfect

No car is without drawbacks. Here are some of the criticisms:

Cost: It remains an expensive vehicle, especially in its higher-end trims. Not accessible for many buyers.

Build quality concerns: Some owners over time report issues with fit and finish, panel alignment, minor quality control glitches.

Competition catching up: As time goes on, other EVs offer comparable range, performance, or luxury at lower cost. What was once unique about the Model S is increasingly matched or even overtaken in certain domains.

Weight and complexity: High performance plus luxury means heavier build; more systems to maintain; possibly higher repair costs.

Why It Still Wins for Me

Given all the models Tesla has produced (Model 3, Model X, Model Y, Roadster, etc.), the Model S remains the one that best balances ambition, performance, innovation, and influence.

It’s not just the fastest / most tech-rich, but it was built early enough to shape the EV market.

Even as the cheaper Model 3 and more practical Model Y expand Tesla’s reach, those are different segments — they trade off some luxury, comfort, prestige, or performance for price and volume.

Also, Elon Musk himself has called the newer Model S (especially the Plaid version) one of Tesla’s “best-ever cars.”

The Model S vs Other Contenders

Model 3: Great for mass adoption, affordability, and safety. But doesn’t match the luxury or top performance of the Model S.

Model Y and X: Offer more space or utility, but bulkier, more expensive, sometimes less nimble.

Roadster (future, concept): Promises astonishing stats when released, but still speculative. As of now, the Model S is proven.

Final Thoughts

At its core, Tesla’s Model S is more than just a car — it’s a statement. It said: electric vehicles can compete, can lead, can redefine what a luxury sedan is. For that reason, for many people (myself included), it earns the title of Tesla’s best ever car.

If I had to pick one: the Tesla Model S, especially in its higher-performance variants (Plaid / P-series), stands out as Tesla’s masterpiece so far.
